Convention 2010 Registration Packet
Convention 2010 Registration Form 01/10
Scholarships:Our Convention raffles will be a gift card basket and the 50/50. We are sticking with our 20-10 theme and hopping to collect 20 - $10 gift cards to major retailers. If more than 20 gift cards are donated that would be awesome! We might even consider making twin baskets and having twin winners!
Ways and Means:Spring convention will be here before we all know it and the Ways & Means Committee is gearing up for it. We're excited that this year we plan to raffle off two fun-filled baskets. The first basket will consist of all kinds of items you might need for a party. Some of these items will include party plates, napkins, party games, candles, cake mixes, cans of frosting, etc. The second basket will a Beer Basket. We're hoping to fill this basket with bottles of micro-beers, non-alcoholic beers, root beer, beer snacks, maybe a movie with a beer theme (ie., The Hangover!), a beer cooler, etc. You get the picture! We're confident that our fellow clubmembers will be very generous and make our baskets overflow with goodies! The raffles will be on display at boutique and tickets will sell for 2 for $1.
Charity Challenge
Literacy for a Lifetime at Seattle Children's Hospital
Literacy for a Lifetime is a charitable giving program which provides new books to patients at Seattle Children's Hospital (a private nonprofit pediatric referral center for Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho, which provides medical care to children regardless of a family's ability to pay; for more details, visit www.seattlechildrens.org). The Literacy for a Lifetime program is sponsored by Educational Development Corporation, home of Usborne children's books, whose partnership with Seattle Children's Hospital began in June 2008. Literacy for a Lifetime is an additional 50% matching grant program - for example, if Seattle Children's Hospital receives $1,000 in donations, Literacy for a Lifetime will provide $1,500 worth of new books to the hospital.
Books play an important role during a child's hospital stay. They help overcome boredom when a child is unable to get out of bed for more active play, and they are used as a distraction during medical procedures, for example, during the placement of an IV. Convention 2010 is pleased to support the Literacy for a Lifetime program, and will do so through the following means:
- An online book fair has been set up so that all NWAMOTC members may shop for Usborne books for their personal use, any time between now and April 30, 2010. The total of online sales will also apply towards Literacy for a Lifetime's matching grant of books to the hospital. The website to order books is www.ubah.com/BF32622. There will be a charge for shipping, but no sales tax will be applied.
- Monetary (cash and check) donations will be collected at Convention and sent directly to Seattle Children's Hospital Foundation, the total of which will apply towards Literacy for a Lifetime's matching grant of books to the hospital. Donation slips and envelopes will be available at Convention.
- A book fair will be held during Convention. NWAMOTC members can shop for Usborne books for their personal use, and the total in sales will apply towards Literacy for a Lifetime's matching grant of books to the hospital.

Friday Night Carnaval
Creative, exotic and energetic parade groups with music and dance performers are a major part of Rio's Carnaval celebration. Blocos are groups of revelers who dress in costumes or special t-shirts with themes and/or logos and parade through sections of the city. Rio is well-known for its Samba schools, which work year-round to prepare extravagant costumes, music and dance performances for the official Samba Parade competition held in the Sambodromo.
The Friday Night Carnaval will feature a Samba Parade of the NWAMOTC's best Samba schools (clubs). Each "Samba school" will parade down our version of the Sambodromo. Clubs are encouraged to participate by choosing a theme and dressing accordingly. We'll have Samba music playing for the parade, and everyone can try out a couple of the Samba moves from Thursday night's lesson! A parade queen will be chosen and prizes for the best Samba school will be awarded. Learn more about Rio's Carnaval at www.ipanema.com, or get a flavor of the Samba rhythm and costumes via www.youtube.com. GET READY TO STRUT YOUR STUFF!
Please email Stephanie Wilds at stephanieblank@hotmail.com to confirm your club's participation by April 16.
Other fun activities during the Friday Night Carnaval will include: a team obstacle course (get ready to laugh); a Wii game station for Samba and soccer enthusiasts; a craft activity (see below for a description); photo "ops" (including Bob, of course!); a DJ and dancing; and snacks.
Friday Night Craft: Beaded Appetizer Picks If watching or performing the Samba is not for you, come to the craft table and let your creative juices flow. Transform simple turkey lacers into colorful beaded picks perfect for skewering tropical Brazilian fruits or sticking into cheese or vegetables when serving appetizers. The cost for the craft will be $10 for four picks and must be pre-paid at the time of registration (see Convention Registration Form).
